FQHCs provide affordable healthcare on a sliding fee scale to under and uninsured populations. FQHCs generally accept Medicare and Medicaid, and often accommodate uninsured individuals.

Homeless Centers
Austin Resource Center for the Homeless
- Non-profit, free services, allows uninsured patients
- Open to women and men (adult men provided with night sleep who receive case management to get into housing)
The shelter is a place where individuals experiencing homelessness become clients, where clients receive information on how and where to access a wide range of services, and where basic services such as restrooms, showers, lockers, laundry, internet access, and mail pick up are provided daily.

Austin Shelter for Women and Children
- Non-profit, free services, allows uninsured patients
- Approximate stay is 90 days, clients work on plans to acquire permanent housing and increase skills and income for people
- Open to women and children
The Austin Shelter for Women and Children (ASWC) is a low barrier, housing focused emergency shelter serving women and dependent children experiencing homelessness. Our goal as operator of the program is to provide “wrap-around” services designed to assist homeless women in ensuring that homelessness is brief, rare, and non-recurring.

Glossary
Sling Scale Fee– Payment method where treatment cost is determined based on a patient’s income and ability to pay.
FQHC– Federally Qualified Health Centers offer comprehensive services, serve underserved populations, and accept Medicare and Medicaid.
Medicaid– Medicaid in the United States is a federal and state program that covers medical costs for some people with limited income and resources.
Medicare– Federal program that provides health insurance for Americans aged 65 and older, and younger people with some disability status as determined by the Social Security Administration.
Family practice– Medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages; the specialist is called a family physician or family doctor.
Pediatrics– Medical Specialty relating to children.
Podiatry– Medical specialty relating to feet, ankle, and lower extremity.
Chiropractic– Form of alternative medicine mostly concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine.
Laboratory Services– Services such as blood draws and analysis.
Behavioral Health– Holistic approach to mental health conditions and substance use disorders.
Mental Health Services– Addressing conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and many others, through counseling, medication, and other supportive services.
